The main story is single-player.
Playing together means Comrades, an included expansion where up to four players create their own characters and take on monster hunts and escort missions online, with computer allies filling empty places.
Few strangers still play it, so arrange a session with friends.
Each player needs a copy; the console versions are sold separately as the Royal Edition and do not play with PC.
